Griffith University researchers played a key role in identifying that particular enzymes are critical in regulating leukemic stem cells, as part of an international collaboration led by Professor Mark Dawson, at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. The CRC for Cancer Therapeutics team at Griffith University, led by Professor Vicky Avery, contributed to a Nature publication “HBO1 is required for the maintenance of leukaemia stem cells.” by developing essential cellular assays. These were utilised to identify and evaluate highly selective small molecule inhibitors that discriminated between the major families of histone acetyltransferases (HAT), that play pivotal roles in leukaemia stem cell regulation.
